Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
