Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
