Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
